Castlemaine Documentary Festival exists because our community believes in the power of true stories, well told. Every year the Festival brings exceptional documentary filmmaking to the historic Theatre Royal on Djaara Country, and every year that weekend is only the visible tip of a much bigger, year-round program.

The festival is three days. The work behind it runs all year: the workshops, the mentoring, the quiet backing of filmmakers’ stories long before opening night. Your gift is what keeps our connective tissue intact.

Where your gift goes

The Festival, our flagship weekend at the Theatre Royal, bringing curated, thoughtfully programmed documentary cinema to audiences across the region and beyond.

Our year-round programs, including LOCALS, our annual festival showcase and mentoring pathway for regional filmmakers, from first-timers to emerging professionals, and Love Compilations, our community storytelling project capturing personal reflections for a shared, lasting archive.

Coming in 2027-28: Castlemaine in a Day, a community filming project capturing a single day in the life of our town, in production in 2027 for screening in 2028.
